First-of-its-kind whole blood processing automation project in Brazil to improve access to blood components for 5.5 million in São Paulo1

Reveos systems and ecosystem connectivity support modernization through standardization, traceability and operational efficiency.

Press release in Portuguese

Lakewood, Colo. and São Paulo, Brazil, October 26, 2026 — Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies (Terumo BCT), a medical technology company and global leader in blood management solutions, announced the adoption of multiple Reveos™ Automated Blood Processing Systems by Ribeirão Preto Blood Center, the high-volume blood network supporting about 120,000 transfusions a year in São Paulo.2 Ribeirão Preto will serve as a reference center for other centers in Brazil, with Terumo BCT assisting local operators in implementing automated processing as part of a drive to modernize public transfusion medicine in Brazil.

Like many regions, São Paulo is confronting a significant health challenge: The need for blood and blood products is rising, but donation rates are contracting. In 2025, Ribeirão Preto supported 119,000 transfusions, a 3.5% increase over the previous year, with an increase in demand for blood component units as well.2,3 Meanwhile, donations dropped by about 2% in that time, continuing a trend seen since 2019 that is not expected to reverse.4

To address the growing disparity, the blood center is moving to modernize its infrastructure through automation and standardization, leveraging the Reveos systems to improve efficiency and meet the high demand for blood components while alleviating constraints related to staffing, space and budgets. The center will transition its whole blood processing workflow from a semi-automated model to a fully automated and integrated operation, generating products like plasma to manage bleeding and clotting and platelets to help treat patients with cancer. As part of this transition, Ribeirão Preto Blood Center will increase its use of leukoreduction across its blood processing operations. Leukoreduction is a process that can help reduce certain transfusion-related complications.

“The work at Ribeirão Preto demonstrates that advanced automation can be adopted in a public blood service when operational needs and long-term resource planning come together," said Eduardo Morato, country manager, Brazil and Latin America distributors, at Terumo BCT. “The project also demonstrates the value of innovating blood processing to other centers across Brazil, showing what is possible with a more connected approach to blood processing.”

The organizations have collaborated for decades, as Ribeirão Preto Blood Center has long relied on other Terumo BCT platforms, including the Trima Accel™ Automated Blood Collection System and the Spectra Optia™ Apheresis System. Through ecosystem connectivity, the project has the potential to integrate information from Terumo BCT platforms across collection and processing, helping provide greater visibility into blood units and components produced, processing activities and operational performance. As the first major Reveos project in Brazil and the first in a public blood center, Ribeirão Preto is also expected to serve as a reference center for other public blood services interested in automation.

Ribeirão Preto Blood Center is a leading transfusion medicine and hematology center in Brazil and serves as a reference for quality, patient care, education and research. Its network supports blood collection, processing and distribution across a broad portion of São Paulo State.
