Corporate Citizenship Report:
Protecting the Environment

Corporate Citizenship Report       Improving Communities       Creating Opportunities       Protecting the Environment       Caring for Associates

As a leading medical device manufacturer, we take the responsibility of continuously minimizing the environmental impact of our operations seriously. While circumstances and programs vary by country, all Terumo BCT offices strive to reduce and recycle waste, conserve water, and reduce our carbon footprint through energy efficiencies.

Recycling and Waste Management

United States
  • Operating a solid waste diversion program, including recycling of vinyl, sheeting, vinyl tubing, trays, plastic bags and waste, cardboard/paper and wood waste, which diverts approximately 65% of waste annually from landfills, including:
    • 900,000 pounds of plastic
    • 550,000 pounds of cardboard and paper
    • 215,000 pounds of wood
  • Recycling more than 10,000 pounds of machine parts annually
  • Recycling more than 2,500 pounds of used IT assets annually
India
  • Reusing or recycling 100% of PVC scrap and other waste through approved agencies in cooperation with the Central Pollution Control Board and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change
Vietnam
  • Recycling 1,365,308 pounds of plastic
  • Recycling 596,691 pounds of cardboard and paper
  • Recycling 137,980 pounds of wood
  • Recycling 167,451 pounds of waste hazardous
  • Recycling 340,669 pounds of residual food from canteen

Water Conservation

  • Reducing water use by 6.2% in 2018 at our Larne, Northern Ireland plant
  • Reducing water consumption by 40% at our operations in India from FY 2014 to FY 2018, which was accomplished by:
    • Improving water recycling
    • Eliminating unnecessary processes and improving other procedures
    • Adding sensor taps in critical areas and replacing the on/off taps with push-type taps
    • Installing and utilizing a rain water harvesting system
  • Recycling wastewater at our Vietnam manufacturing plant for irrigation of the onsite gardens

Energy Use and Carbon Footprint

  • Ongoing efficiencies in our operations in India since 2014 have resulted in a 20% reduction in the use of furnace oil and 12% reduction in electricity consumption, accomplished largely through equipment upgrades, monitoring energy consumption and optimizing heating, ventilation and air systems
  • Since 2014, we have reduced tanker water consumption by 87% in India by constructing an open well and ensuring maximum availability of municipal water, which has also reduced CO2 emissions through minimal use of trucks previously used to transport water
  • Utilizing a multi-column distillation unit hot water return reuse at our canteen in India saved approximately 5.5 tons of liquified petroleum gas in FY 2018
  • Generating biogas from food waste to fuel the cafeteria cooking stoves at our facility in India
  • Installing solar panels at our Vietnam manufacturing facility canteen for hot water, which reduced liquid propane gas consumption by 20%
  • Installing LED lighting throughout our Larne, Northern Ireland facility
  • Providing all Lakewood, Colorado associates with a free EcoPass to encourage use of public transportation to commute to and from work

Improving Associate Safety

Terumo BCT identifies higher-risk work tasks through continuous hazard analysis, injury trending and feedback from associates. One of the bonding tasks were identified as a regular source of repetitive motion injuries and concerns. It was determined that adding cobots to the manufacturing line would reduce stress on associates’ hands.

In November 2018, Terumo BCT implemented its second cobot system to reduce repetitive motion injury and improve quality and efficiency. This project added six additional cobots and automated parts delivery systems to three of our manufacturing lines in our Lakewood, Colorado, cleanrooms. Eleven high-ergonomic risk bonds were eliminated once all cobot systems were in place, reducing manual bonds by 15% on these flow lines — reducing bonds by 30 million.

We will continue to assess risk workstations and identify potential opportunities for additional cobots on the manufacturing floor.
