Corporate Citizenship Report:
Improving Communities

Corporate Citizenship Report       Improving Communities       Creating Opportunities       Protecting the Environment       Caring for Associates

Through Terumo BCT’s charitable giving efforts, the company donated more than $449,500 USD to nonprofit organizations in FY 2018. The majority of donations go to organizations that align to the company’s promise, Unlocking the Potential of Blood.

As a company committed to bettering lives by unlocking the potential of blood, Terumo BCT’s community programs align to that commitment by supporting the organizations that directly touch the patients and communities our associates serve every day.

Donating Blood:

In October 2018, the ComeTogether Team in Belgium, a volunteer corporate group of 10 associates, organized a blood drive focused on external promotion within the business park and successfully welcomed 70 donors and received 55 blood units. Our partner and customer, the Flemish Red Cross, considered the drive a success, as there were people whose last donation was 20 years ago. The report showed that potential donors in Belgium lack easily accessible places, close to their offices, to donate blood. Terumo BCT Belgium hosted its second blood donation this May 2019 with more than 100 donors preregistered.

Supporting Global Healthcare

Global Blood Fund Project C.U.R.E. Mercy Ships
Global Blood Fund

Established as a charity in 2008, Global Blood Fund (GBF) supports transfusion-related initiatives in more than 50 countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Among its programs, GBF provides donated blood bank equipment, delivers and sponsors training programs, and supports efforts to reduce the stark inequalities in access to safe blood that exist between higher- and lower-income countries.

In early 2019, Terumo BCT provided a USD $22,000 grant to GBF to support two new programs.

A USD $10,000 grant will support a distance-learning certification program in donor recruitment and management education. In partnership with the Africa Society for Blood Transfusion (AfSBT), GBF has agreed to produce in 2019 a video series of 12 lectures written by leading African experts covering topics across the often-neglected discipline of donor recruitment and management.

These video lectures will be made available online and free of charge to professionals throughout Africa, thereby overcoming the limitations and costs associated with delivering on-site, face-to-face training. Certification will encourage participation and allow practitioners to show evidence of their competence, which will improve standards of donor-related professional practice in Africa as well as, potentially, other resource-limited settings.

A USD $12,000 grant will support a pre-donation blood typing pilot project in Ghana. The concept of blood typing as a pre-donation engagement strategy is well established and has been successful in a small number of African countries but has not yet been widely adopted. GBF has agreed with the blood authorities in Ghana to co-design and support the pilot introduction of “What’s Your Type?” campaign to establish impact. This proven approach should lead to improved donor recruitment in Ghana and an evidence base for further implementation in other countries where this strategy might be beneficial.

The hope is this program will help address the shortage of volunteer donors in Africa, which is arguably the most significant blood bank challenge facing the continent.

Project C.U.R.E.

Project C.U.R.E. is the largest provider of donated medical supplies and equipment to developing countries. Terumo BCT has provided financial, in-kind and volunteer support to the organization. Matthew Long, Global Systems Performance Engineer, serves as President of the Young Professional Board for Project C.U.R.E. and is one of several Terumo BCT associates who volunteers with the organization.

Established in 1987, Project C.U.R.E. is today the world’s largest distributor of medical donations to developing countries. Project C.U.R.E. operates distribution centers in Colorado, Tennessee, Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Arizona and nine collection centers across the U.S., collecting donations of excess medical supplies and previous-generation equipment from U.S. hospitals and medical manufacturers.

Working with hundreds of partners globally, Project C.U.R.E. matches these valuable donations with healthcare facilities in severely resource-limited communities to empower doctors and nurses with the tools they need to treat disease, deliver vaccines, perform life-changing surgeries and ensure safe childbirth. Thanks to the dedication of thousands of volunteers nationwide, Project C.U.R.E. has touched the lives of patients, families, and children in more than 130 countries.

In October 2018, Terumo BCT was a USD $10,000 bronze sponsor for Project C.U.R.E.’s 8th Annual High Rollers for Health & Hope. Funds raised at the event supported the shipment of medical supplies to hospitals and clinics in Serbia.

In early 2019, Terumo BCT provided a USD $27,700 grant to Project C.U.R.E. to fund a 40-foot C.U.R.E. Cargo shipment of medical supplies to Bura Sub-County Hospital in Tana River County, Kenya, in partnership with the First Lady of Kenya Margaret Kenyatta. It is anticipated that the supplies will arrive at the facility in autumn 2019.

Associates also volunteer their time. The Charitable Contributions Review Committee spent a November afternoon at Project C.U.R.E’s Denver warehouse sorting medical supplies. During their holiday meeting, the Procurement and Supply Chain team assembled nearly 100 Kits for Kids — small backpacks filled with personal hygiene and basic "medicine cabinet" items that are scarce in the developing world.

As part of Terumo BCT’s new charitable giving strategy, the company is working to formalize a program to donate product and lab equipment to Project C.U.R.E.

Mercy Ships

As an organization serving blood centers, we understand the importance of blood in helping to save lives. This need becomes even more critical when patients are being treated on a floating hospital serving some of West Africa's poorest nations.

The Africa Mercy is the largest ship in the fleet of the nonprofit organization, Mercy Ships. Mercy Ships is the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship with a volunteer crew of 1,000 professionals from up to 40 nations. The ship includes five operating theatres and has recovery, intensive care and low-dependency wards with 80 patient beds

Watch this video from Mercy Ships to learn more.

For nearly a decade, Terumo BCT has donated blood bags to Mercy Ships. These bags are vital to the mission of Mercy Ships. Volunteer staff and crew on board the Africa Mercy regularly donate blood to meet the ship's transfusion needs for the 7,000 surgical interventions performed on board each year.

On average, Terumo BCT provides 1,000 blood bags in response to each annual or biannual restocking request received from Mercy Ships. In FY 2018, we donated more than USD $3,800 of product, including blood bags, blood transfer bags and aluminum sealing clips for blood bags.

Supporting Associates' Passions

Terumo BCT recognizes that our associates want to make contributions to their communities not only with financial support, but also with their time. In early 2019, we launched two new programs to support our associates' philanthropic interests by offering two distinct programs — Matching Gifts and Donations for Doers — that provide financial grants to charitable organizations supported by the personal passions of our associates.

In FY 2018, Terumo BCT Awarded 33 Associate-Inspired Charitable Grants to 28 Organizations Totaling USD $10,325

Donations for Doers Matching Grants
Donations for Doers

Through our Donations for Doers program, associates who volunteer at least 40 hours of their time with a nonprofit organization can apply for a grant of USD $250 to support that organization.

Over the past year, our associates volunteered their time mentoring youth on outdoor backpacking trips, coaching wheelchair basketball, playing in a community orchestra, fostering animals, maintaining trails in public parks and lending leadership by serving on the boards of directors for numerous organizations.

Seth has coached the Denver Junior Rolling Nuggets for the past three seasons. He is also a player for the Rolling Nuggets men's basketball team and a member of the Colorado Wheelchair Basketball board of directors.

Jenn has supported the Dumb Friends League as a foster parent, serving 100 hours in 2018 alone.

Alia is a volunteer with a community orchestra. She donates her time to play with the musicians and puts in countless hours practicing, attending rehearsals, performing in concerts and spreading the word about the orchestra.

John serves as a mentor on a week-long backpacking trip for youth who often do not have opportunities to explore the outdoors.

Paulo is an active member of his local Rotaract Club, heading the committee for their largest charity fundraising event. He is also involved in coordinating their international social project in Portugal.

Thank you!! I really appreciate your generous donation to Big City Mountaineers, your gift will make a difference in the lives of under-resourced youth. It means a lot to me that Terumo is willing to support an organization and a mission that I care about. Thanks so much for your kind support.

Matching Grants

Our matching grants program provides a 1:1 match, up to USD $500, to nonprofit organizations where our associates make a personal financial contribution.

Over the past year, our associates donated financially to support a diverse range of organizations, including healthcare advocacy and support groups, public radio, the symphony, food banks, educational institutions, conservation groups and animal welfare organizations.

A huge thank you to Terumo BCT's charitable donation matching program for supporting my efforts to raise funds for the Fred Hollows Foundation in Australia. The Fred Hollows Foundation is a nonprofit aid organization focused on treating and preventing blindness and other vision problems.

For the last two years, a group of friends and I did a 60 km (37 mi) walk to raise awareness and much-needed funds for this charity. This year alone, our fundraising and Terumo BCT's donation together will allow for over 120 surgeries to restore sight in people around the world!

Christmas for the Poor

In December 2018, our associates in Brazil contributed to an event, “Christmas for the Poor People,” promoted by several local nonprofit organizations. Associates contributed to the hygiene products and nonperishable food collection distributed at a dinner accompanied by popular music offered to 1,500 poor and homeless people at Praça da Sé, a square in the heart of Sao Paulo.

Fundraising to Support Cancer Research

The Terumo BCT Larne office hosts several fundraising events to contribute to Leukemia & Lymphoma Northern Ireland (LLNI). Each year they also ask associates to nominate another charity to support. In 2018, they selected Helping Hand – Charity to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. Each of the two charities received GBP £5,500 in 2018.

Funds were raised by various activities including prize drawings, pick a square, football competitions, a craft fair, a laptop sale, donations in lieu of Christmas cards, a charity board and support of the Northern Ireland Moonlit Walk, which is similar to the Light The Night walk in Lakewood.

The team was able to raise funds to support the purchase of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) hood which is used for the amplification of DNA and/or RNA and will enable further LLNI research efforts. The funds for the Royal Belfast Hospital were used to purchase a new mobile ultrasound scanner.

Supporting TOUCH Community Services

In FY 2018, Terumo BCT Singapore, Terumo Singapore and Terumo Asia Holdings came together to collaborate with TOUCH Community Services to launch three meaningful CSR activities for the elderly and children from underprivileged backgrounds.

June 2018: Meals on Wheels
TOUCH Home Care runs the Meals On Wheels service, which delivers two meals a day throughout the whole year to the doorsteps of the frail and elderly. As volunteers, our associates picked up hot, prepacked meals from one of the collection points, sorted them according to diet (such as standard, diabetic or vegetarian) and delivered them.

July 2018: Afternoon Bingo Session at TOUCH Senior Activity Centre
This event provides our associates a platform and opportunity to interact and spend some quality time with the elderly who are usually lonely, socially isolated and/or vulnerable individuals with little or no family support. Through the bingo game and tea break session held at TOUCH Senior Activity Centre, we hope to promote active aging and increase the elderly folks’ social engagement.

December 2018: River Safari Outing with Children From Underprivileged Families
In collaboration with volunteers from TOUCH Young Arrows, we brought 50 children ranging from 5 to 12 years old from low-income and/or single-parent families to a Christmas outing at River Safari. After treating the children to a delectable lunch, our volunteers accompanied them on a day out at one of Singapore’s famous attractions, River Safari, where they can get up close and personal with animals and take fun rides. We also sponsored the children’s Christmas gifts.

Veteran’s Day

Our Lakewood headquarters proudly celebrated Veterans Day by assembling boxed lunches for Denver’s homeless veterans through Soldiers’ Angels. Volunteers packed 500 kits in less than an hour! Associates also shared their gratitude by writing thank-you notes to include with each of the kits.

In addition, our now-retired CEO David Perez and other senior leaders hosted a luncheon on our Lakewood campus for more than 60 Terumo BCT veterans.

Disaster Response

In times of disaster, we support our communities, associates and customers.
India Flooding California Wildfires Associate Catastrophic Assistance Fund
India Flooding

In August 2018, severe flooding affected the south Indian state of Kerala, where Terumo BCT’s Trivandrum manufacturing site is located, due to unusually high rainfall during the monsoon season. It was the worst flooding in Kerala in nearly a century. Over 445 people died and 15 are missing, while at least one million people were evacuated.

All 14 districts of the state were placed on red alert. According to the Kerala government, one-sixth of the total population of Kerala was directly affected by the floods and related incidents.

While our facility and people were not directly impacted by the flooding, we were committed to helping with the relief efforts.

Of the USD $28,748 donated to the Chief Ministers Disaster Relief fund, USD $14,374 was funded by management and the other half was raised through associate donations. In addition, approximately 500 of our 1,400 local associates were also significantly involved in supporting the flood relief activities, helping to mobilize relief materials and working in the relief camps.

More than 50 associates visited the flood-affected areas and helped to clean and repair the houses damaged by the deluge.

Funding was used to install a Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plant at Monkombu, a hamlet located at the banks of River Pamba. The RO plant will benefit more than 400 families by providing them with safe drinking water.

California Wildfires

Following the devastating California wildfires in 2018, Terumo BCT made a USD $10,000 donation to Vitalant, one of our largest U.S. customers, to support their 470 northern California employees who were impacted by the Paradise and Camp wildfires.

Associate Catastrophic Assistance Fund

Because we do not want our associates to face life-changing catastrophic events alone, we created an associate Catastrophic Assistance Fund to provide financial assistance after a catastrophic event. In 2018, the fund benefitted four associates who received more than USD $15,700 in assistance. More than 55 associates donated to the Catastrophic Assistance Fund through payroll deduction, contributing more than USD $8,000 annually. Since 2013, the fund has provided 17 grants to associates.
