Urges Local Businesses Take the First Step to Help a Good Cause
May 19, 2008 – DENVER, CO – The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Rocky Mountain Chapter named CaridianBCT President and CEO David Perez Corporate Walk Chair of its annual Light The Night® Walk in Denver. LLS’s annual fundraising walks are held nationwide to raise funds for cancer research and patient services. The 2008 Colorado Walks are expected to raise approximately $1 million in support of the LLS mission to Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
LLS holds walks each fall in approximately 240 communities across the United States and Canada. Participants carry illuminated balloons – white for survivors, red for supporters, gold in remembrance of those who have lost their battles – to honor and commemorate lives touched by blood cancer. Four metro-area Walks will take place in September (Longmont, Colorado Springs, Denver, and Flatirons).
Actor Rob Brown is the 2008 national spokesperson for Light The Night Walk. Brown stars in the new film, “The Express,” as Ernie Davis, the first African American to win the Heisman trophy but then succumbed to leukemia before he could make his NFL debut with the Cleveland Browns.
“Light The Night is much more than a fundraiser,” said David Perez. “It is a celebration of life and a great way to build a spirit of caring and cooperation among employees as they help others. I am honored to serve as the Chair and encourage commitment from local businesses and corporations.”
Last year approximately 300 teams of employees, along with their friends and families raised more than $745,000 for LLS. This year, the Rocky Mountain Chapter hopes to add 25 new corporate teams.
“We hope to make this year’s event a record-breaker with the help of our corporate partners,” said Rebecca Russell, Executive Director, Rocky Mountain Chapter. “Funds raised through corporate and individual contributions allow LLS to bring help and hope to thousands of cancer patients and their families. And it’s great having David Perez and Gambro BCT on board to help raise awareness of Light The Night.”
