Quantum System Automates Cell Expansion
LAKEWOOD, Colo.—31 March, 2011— CaridianBCT, a leading global provider of technology, products and services in the blood banking, transfusion medicine and cell therapy industries, today announced the launch of a new product, the Quantum Cell Expansion System. Designed to automate cell culture in a closed system, the cutting-edge technology is intended to support advancements in the field of cell therapy by streamlining cell culture processes while reducing the risk of contamination for large-scale cell manufacturing.
“The release of the Quantum system truly further advances the burgeoning field of cell therapy,” said David Perez, president and CEO of CaridianBCT. “Automating the process of culturing stem cells underscores our ongoing commitment to the cell therapy industry as we continue to provide innovative solutions to the researchers, physicians and commercial manufacturers developing these applications.”
Current methods used to culture cells are manual and complex, which can limit the ability to provide cellular therapy to a large number of patients. As an integrated, closed system, the Quantum Cell Expansion System improves efficiency of the cell culture process—allowing for larger scale manufacturing of cells under Good Manufacturing Process (GMP) control and with less risk of contamination.
“The Quantum Cell Expansion System is the future of cell culture—I am excited to announce that the days of the T-flasks are over,” claimed Professor Chris Mason, of University College London. “The Quantum system has everything that is required to advance the bioprocessing of cells for both research and the clinic. Our first results with this advanced technology are highly promising, and coupled with the outstanding support we have received, I have absolutely no hesitations in recommending this revolutionary approach to other cell culture labs.”
CaridianBCT is collaborating with top research and commercial institutions around the world to further validate the Quantum system’s performance. In the previously announced collaboration with the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (NIHCC), the Quantum system was able to successfully grow Human Bone Marrow Stromal Cells (HBMSCs), which can be used in a wide range of clinical applications. Additionally, the Cultivated Adult Stem Cell Alternative for Damaged tissuE (CASCADE) consortium, a European Union (EU) project consisting of 16 organizations, is using the Quantum system to optimize stem cell culture for clinical applications.
About Quantum Cell Expansion System:
The Quantum system is an automated system for growing adherent and suspension cells in a closed environment. Based on hollow fiber bioreactor technology, the Quantum system allows for large-scale manufacturing of cells under Good Manufacturing Process (GMP) control while reducing the risk of contamination. Designed for multiple cell types and protocol flexibility, the Quantum system streamlines cell culture, delivers reproducible processes and reduces the risk of contamination for cell manufacturing within research, clinical trial and commercial cell therapy fields.
